So Why does every 2nd child wear orthotics?
Prevention is better than cure!
Podiatrists understand the biomechanics of the feet and the lower limbs and believe that if the feet are in biomechanical alignment the rest of the body will also be in alignment. We are able to achieve a significant improvement in how the feet and body function with the use of orthotics.
If the feet are flat and roll inwards, this causes the knees to internally rotate which then internally rotates the hips and the pelvis. This causes increased wear and tear (degeneration) of the joints creating more muscle and tendon tension. The overloaded muscles and tendons cause reactive stress which causes pain and inflammation of the joints and soft tissues. This is a common problem during periods of growth.
Correctly fitted orthotics can put the feet back into an improved functioning position and thus take many stresses off the rest of the lower limbs and lower back.
Children don’t need to wear orthotics 24/7 because once the muscles and tendons become strengthened and not consistently over-worked, they become resilient and have enough flexibility and elasticity to cope with the level of exercise kids do today.
Prevention of pain is easier than trying to stop pain once it has become established.
Making custom made orthotics is not an exact science and takes a skilled and experienced Podiatrist to prescribe what your child needs.
“ We cannot make a foot into a mathematical equation and bingo this is the answer as to what the orthotics should be”. All feet are different and the requirements of the orthotics vary between individuals.
It takes experience. skill, expertise and dedicated passion to get orthotics correct for each set of feet.
At the Kew Foot Clinic we believe making orthotics is an art form and we have what it takes to make orthotics exceptionally successful.
