PACT Photodynamic fungal nail treatment:
What is PACT?
PACT is a photodynamic fungal treatment that kills fungal and bacteria cells within toe nails without causing damage to healthy nail tissue and skin.
How does it work?
PACT is a photodynamic therapy where a photosensitive gel is applied to the nail and a high intensity wavelength is used to produce an energy transfer and localised chemical effect. This treatment effectively destroys the fungal and bacteria cells in the nail without damaging healthy nail and skin tissue.
Why does it only kill fungal and bacteria cells and not human cells?
Micro-organisms which include fungal and bacterial cells possess a cell wall, whereas typical human cells have a cell membrane.
A photosensitive gel is applied to the affected nail. This gel contains a blue dye which selectively targets the fungal cell wall making them sensitive to the light of the specific high intensity wavelength delivered through the PACT machine and destroying the fungal and bacteria cells.
How many treatments do I need?
The PACT treatment takes approximately 20 minutes per nail and requires a series of treatments over a 6 month period.
The number of treatments is ultimately determined by our experienced Podiatrists, depending on the severity of the fungal infection.
PACT has no known side effects and is not painful.
Use this table as a general guide as to your treatment regime.
