Why every middle aged person should have their feet checked?

Posted on October 15, 2014 Written by Kew Foot Clinic

You go to the doctor to have your blood pressure checked. You have blood tests to check that you are healthy. It is a good idea to get your feet checked. The ideal age to have your feet checked is 5 to 6 years of age. However, it is never too late.

  • Feet have many pressures put on them throughout your life.
  • The long hours we are on our feet
  • The types of shoes we wear are not always good for our feet
  • The genetics we inherited which determine the shape of our feet and how they function.

The two most problematic parts of our feet are the heels and the big toe joint.

If you are unlucky enough to have developed a bunion or pain in the big toe it is so important to stablise this joint and take pressure off this joint. It is the pivot point to get your foot up and over for propulsion. Without this pivot motion the rest of your body becomes out of alignment causing you pain throughout your whole body. It can be localized to your foot but can extend into your knees, hips, back and neck.

As a biomechanical Podiatrists we treat you holistically (your whole body) not just your feet. We can help stabilize your alignment and reduce the severity of your deformity developing.

If you are experiencing heel pain. This is a very common problem and most often relatively easy to treat. Our arches of our feet tend to collapse as we get older. This occurs because you lose muscle tone and elasticity in our muscles, tendons and ligaments. When the arch collapses it puts significant amount of strain on other muscles and tendons causing fatigue and inflammation in the heel region causing you pain.

With the correct regime of treatment this pain can be diminished quite often within 6 to 10 weeks.
